Marshall’s baseball season came to an abrupt end Tuesday in Montgomery, Alabama.
The No. 10-seeded Thundering Herd fell to No. 7 Louisiana 11-1 in seven innings in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at DABOS Park.
Marshall (23-32) scored the game’s first run in the top of the first inning before Louisiana answered immediately and never looked back.
Tyler Kamerer reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored when Jackson Halter singled to center field and Louisiana committed an error, giving the Herd a 1-0 lead.
The Ragin’ Cajuns responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles from Lee Amedee and Drew Markle, along with a Marshall error, to take control early.
Louisiana added three more runs in the third inning to extend the lead to 6-1. Owen Galt delivered an RBI single before Mark Collins ripped a two-run double to left field.
The Cajuns broke the game open in the fifth when Noah Lewis launched a three-run home run to push the advantage to 9-1. Louisiana ended the game via the 10-run rule in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by Amedee and a walk-off RBI single from Colt Brown.
“Today we obviously weren’t good enough,” said Marshall coach Greg Beals. “I thought Louisiana played a really good ball game. They had a good plan offensively and they deserved to win today’s baseball game.”
Marshall managed just three hits in the contest, getting singles from Halter, Mason Onate and Cleary Simpson.
Bryce Blevins took the loss for the Herd after allowing six runs on six hits in three innings. Louisiana starter Cody Brasch earned the win after striking out six and allowing one unearned run over 5 1/3 innings.
Louisiana finished with 15 hits, led by Collins, who went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Lewis added a three-run homer.
