SOUTH CHARLESTON – During a wild opening day at the WVSSAC softball state tournament, which saw multiple weather delays, top-seeded Logan opened the Class AA quarterfinals Wednesday with a no-hit victory over Midland Trail. 

Wildcats’ pitcher Myleigh Adkins struck out 15 at Little Creek Park and allowed just two walks in a complete-game no-hitter to lead the Wildcats past Midland Trail, proving the road to the state title goes through Logan. 

The Wildcats (23-7)  generated enough offense with five runs on five hits while taking advantage of four walks.

Shae Conley led the Wildcats offensively, going 1 for 1 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Journee Akers added two hits, while Addison Richardson and Lena Setser each tripled.

Midland Trail pitcher Stephanie Harrell allowed five runs over six innings in the circle for the Patriots.

Petersburg 14, Lincoln 12: Weather delays couldn’t cool off Petersburg’s bats Wednesday night.

Petersburg (23-5) erased an early nine-run deficit and rallied late for a 14-12 victory over Lincoln in a wild Class AA quarterfinal. Multiple weather delays throughout the day pushed Wednesday night’s scheduled consolation games to Thursday morning.

Lincoln (23-7) stormed out to a 9-0 lead after scoring two runs in the first inning and seven more in the second. Petersburg answered with four runs in the third inning, added two more in the fourth and continued chipping away before completing the comeback with late runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Ella Chew delivered one of the top performances of the tournament for Petersburg, going 3 for 3 with a home run, five RBIs and five runs scored. Shyane Tawney added two hits and an RBI, while Cheyenne Sites, Blair Loy and Kinsley Crites each drove in runs during the comeback effort.

Lincoln was led offensively by Kerstyn Leggett, who finished 3 for 3 with an RBI, while Reese Bennett went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Aspen Dyer added two RBIs and scored twice, while Kennedy Linville collected two hits and scored twice.

The teams combined for 26 runs and 22 hits in the back-and-forth affair.

Oak Glen 12, Weir 3: Oak Glen erupted for 17 hits and scored in five different innings to pull away from Weir (21-11) in a Class AA quarterfinal.

Brayley Lash powered the Golden Bears offensively, finishing 3 for 5 with five RBIs, a double and a triple. Mattie Carney added three hits, two RBIs and struck out nine in a complete-game effort in the circle.

Oak Glen broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning after building a 7-3 lead through six innings. Marleah Lough collected three hits, while Kynslee Landess drove in three runs and Danica Holden added two hits.

Weir was led offensively by Eliza Utt and Bella Weber, who each recorded two hits. Utt also took the loss in the circle after allowing 12 runs, nine earned, across seven innings.

Sissonville 4, Independence 2: Sissonville scored three runs in the sixth inning to rally past Independence (22-12) and advance to the Class AA semifinals.

After trailing 2-1 entering the sixth, the Indians capitalized on timely hitting to take control.

Bella Alexander, Lydia Ellis and Jaidyn Taylor each drove in a run for Sissonville (26-6), while Jozey Wilson tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts, allowing two runs on six hits.

Independence was led by Paytin Brehm, who finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Jenna Joyce added an RBI and struck out seven in six innings in the circle.

Wednesday night’s consolation games were rescheduled for Thursday morning due to the delays forcing Lincoln and Petersburg’s semifinal into the late hours of Wednesday evening.
