SOUTH CHARLESTON — For more than a decade, the road to the Class AAA softball championship has often run through Winfield and Herbert Hoover.

That remains the case again in 2026.

The WVSSAC Class AAA softball state tournament gets underway Tuesday at Little Creek Park in South Charleston with the Generals and Huskies being the favorites.

However, Point Pleasant, Keyser and top seed John Marshall are waiting to dethrone the traditional powers.

Storylines to watch

Here’s the storylines we’re watching:

Can anyone stop Winfield’s dynasty?

The Generals enter South Charleston chasing a fourth consecutive state championship after winning titles in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Winfield defeated Frankfort in last year’s championship game and remains the standard in Class AAA softball.

The Generals’ postseason experience and championship pedigree make Winfield the team to beat until someone proves otherwise.

John Marshall seeks first title since 2023

The Monarchs earned the No. 1 seed after posting a 25-5 record and one of the state’s most balanced offenses. John Marshall is batting .336 as a team with 281 hits and 200 RBIs while featuring seven regular starters batting .333 or better.

John Marshall is also the only program in this year’s field with previous state championships outside of Point Pleasant, Winfield and Herbert Hoover, having won titles in 1988, 2012 and its most recent in 2023.

Herbert Hoover looks to return to the top

Few programs in West Virginia have enjoyed the sustained success of Herbert Hoover.

The Huskies won six state championships between 2014 and 2022 and lost to Winfield in last year’s semifinals. Herbert Hoover once again enters the tournament with a deep lineup led by Brooklyn Haas (.429), Tori Jones (.406), Emma Hanson (.358) and Ava Veltri (.330).

If the Huskies can navigate the bracket, a potential rematch with Winfield would be among the most anticipated games of the week.

Is this the year a new contender breaks through?

Several teams arrive with realistic championship aspirations.

Point Pleasant (25-8), which won titles in 1998 and 2008, features one of the state’s most dangerous hitters in Cierra Patrick, who is batting .510 with nine home runs.

Keyser (23-6) brings perhaps the tournament’s most explosive offense, led by Bailey Felton’s .605 average and 11 home runs.

PikeView (22-7) is powered by Emily Compton, who is batting .465 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs.

Each team has the firepower to make a deep run.

What impact will the expanded field have?

The Class AAA tournament expands to eight teams this year with a grueling road to the state championship.

As evident by Wheeling Central’s win in Class A and Petersburg’s win in Class AA this week, surviving the winners bracket is advantageous in the championship game.

The larger field also creates more opportunities for upsets and rewards teams that may not have qualified under the previous format. Brooke (18-16) and Robert C. Byrd (15-17) enter as lower seeds but feature players capable of changing games.

Brooke’s Alyssa Rado is batting .454 with seven home runs and 44 RBIs, while Robert C. Byrd’s Carly Barlow may be the most dangerous player in the tournament as she enters with a .584 batting average with 59 hits and 42 stolen bases.

With additional teams and additional games, the path to a championship becomes more difficult navagate over three days.

A classification defined by two programs

Since 2014, Winfield and Herbert Hoover have combined to win nine Class AAA state championships. The only interruptions came from one team – Winfield, the reigning queens of West Virginia high school softball in Class AAA.

The biggest question entering the week is whether the tournament’s established powers will continue their dominance or whether a new contender will emerge from one of the a deep tournament field.
