SOUTH CHARLESTON — For the first time in program history, Morgantown is in position to win a WVSSAC Class AAAA softball state championship.
The fourth-seeded Mohigans put together a dominant day Wednesday at Little Creek Park, shutting out defending state champion Cabell Midland 3-0 before blanking No. 3 George Washington 6-0 in the winners bracket final.
Morgantown (28-10) will play for the state championship Thursday against either No. 3-seed George Washington, University or Parkersburg South.
The path to the title game wasn’t easy.
To get there, the Mohigans had to go through the defending champions and one of the state’s most consistent programs. They did so by allowing a combined three hits and no runs across 14 innings.
Morgantown opened the day by ending Cabell Midland’s bid for a second consecutive state title.
Pitcher Madison Wisman scattered one hit over 6 2/3 innings, striking out six and working around three walks as the Mohigans handed the Knights their first loss of the tournament. Morgantown broke a scoreless tie in the third inning when Wisman drove home Carper Messerly with a sacrifice fly before adding two insurance runs in the seventh.
Messerly, Madi Stone and Wisman accounted for Morgantown’s three hits while Caroline Mallow, Grace Robinson and Messerly scored the runs.
Cabell Midland ace Drea Watts was nearly as effective, striking out 12 while allowing three runs on three hits, but the Knights managed just one hit offensively.
The loss dropped Cabell Midland into the elimination bracket, where the defending champions were later eliminated by Parkersburg South, ending their title defense.
Morgantown carried its momentum into the winners bracket final against George Washington.
After four scoreless innings, the Mohigans broke through in the fifth when Kayleigh White’s RBI groundout scored Messerly.
Morgantown added two runs in the sixth on Beth Robinson’s two-run single and broke the game open with three more runs in the seventh.
The Mohigans finished with 11 hits in the victory. Robinson drove in three runs, while Stone collected two hits as Morgantown pulled away late.
George Washington managed five hits but could not generate a run as Morgantown completed its second shutout of the day.
The Patriots await the winner of Parkersburg South-University in Thursday’s elimination bracket final, scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
The winner will play Morgantown in the championship game set for 1:30 p.m.
